Henry J.L. Schafer, Jr., a charter member of FOP Lodge 113, passed away on May 27, 2023, at the age of 90. Hank was a member of the Lodge for over 55 years.

After serving as a Jumpmaster Paratrooper during the Koren War, Hank continued serving his country with a long and distinguished career, first as a volunteer fireman for the City of Harrison, Ohio, and later when in 1966 he became a deputy with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department. In 1970, Hank was promoted to the rank of Detective, and he retired on July 1, 1997, after over 30 years of service with the Department.

After his retirement from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department, Hank continued his long life of public service, joining the Dearborn County, Indiana Sheriff’s Department.

Henry “Hank” Schafer, of West Harrison, passed away on May 27, 2023 at the age of 90. He was born to Henry L. and Mildred (Messiah) Schafer on October 12, 1932, in Cambridge, MA. Hank served in the US Army during the Korean War from Feb. 1950 to Apr. 1953, and was a Jumpmaster Paratrooper. Even with all his training he still hated going on airplanes later in life. He worked at Fernald for 13 years and then went to work for the Hamilton County Sheriff Department. Hank was a Detective Deputy Sheriff at Hamilton County for 31 years and after retiring he served as a deputy Sheriff for Dearborn County Sheriff’s office. Public service was in Hank’s blood. He also served as a Harrison Volunteer Fireman from 1958 – 1975. He enjoyed many things in life especially his many wonderful toys. Boating on Lake Cumberland and the Ohio River to riding Motorcycles and camping were always fun filled trips with friends and family. In later years he enjoyed going on Cruises and visiting the Casino’s. Hank attended Dearborn Hills U.M.C., a charter member of the F.O.P Lodge 113, Lifetime member of the American Legion Post 199, and a member of Snow Lodge Post 193.

His legacy will be carried on with his beloved wife Bennie (nee Noes); children Mark (Karen) Schafer, Lori Riede, Margo (Chris) Bennett, Rusty Schafer; and bonus children: Timothy (Lori) Wright, Allan (Kimberley) Wright; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; siblings: Sandra (Tom) DiMaggio & Deborah Schafer.

Preceded in death by his parents; daughter: Nicole Schafer and sister: June Collins.
Visitation on Saturday, June 3, 2023, from 11 AM until the time of the services at 1 pm. F.O.P services will start promptly at 1 pm followed by the funeral service with Rev. Scott Stephans and Rev. Bob Land. Burial will follow with Military Honors provided by the Harrison Honor Guard and the US Army at New Haven Cemetery. Memorials are requested to the F.O.P. Funeral home representative will be present to accept memorials during the visitation.
